A family-approved fund is established as community vigils and investigative work continue

The Central Indiana Police Foundation has launched an official memorial fundraiser for the family of Beech Grove Police Officer Brian Elliott, who was killed in the line of duty on February 16, 2026. The foundation said donations through the fund are intended to go directly to Elliott’s family, including his wife, Erin.

Elliott, 33, died after he and another officer were shot while responding to a reported domestic disturbance at an apartment complex in the 100 block of Diplomat Court in Beech Grove. Both officers were transported to Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis; Elliott later died from his injuries. The second officer was hospitalized in stable condition and was released the following day.

What is known about the shooting and arrest

Authorities said the officers were shot at the doorway of an apartment. A statewide Blue Alert was issued during the search for the suspect. Police later took 47-year-old Kenneth T. Johnson into custody the same night, after a multi-agency search in the area. The investigation remained ongoing as of February 18, and officials have emphasized that criminal allegations must be tested in court.

Officer Elliott’s background

Elliott was a Beech Grove native and a graduate of Beech Grove High School. He was sworn in with the Beech Grove Police Department in September 2024. Before joining Beech Grove, he served with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. During law-enforcement training, he was recognized for academic achievement and leadership roles.

Fundraiser details and how donations are being handled

The memorial fundraiser is being administered by the Central Indiana Police Foundation, a nonprofit that has been used in previous cases as an official vehicle for donations benefiting families of officers killed in the line of duty in Central Indiana. The foundation has provided options for contributing online and by mail.

  • Mail-in donations can be sent to the Central IN Police Foundation, 1525 Shelby Street, Indianapolis, IN 46203.
  • Checks are to be made payable to “Central IN Police Foundation” with “Officer Brian Elliott Memorial Fund” noted in the memo line.

Community mourning and public events

Beech Grove officials scheduled a candlelit vigil for Wednesday, February 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Beech Grove Police Station. City leaders said the gathering is intended to provide a space for residents to grieve collectively and to honor Elliott’s service.

Elliott’s death has prompted an outpouring of condolences across local and regional law-enforcement agencies, alongside public memorials outside the police department.

As fundraising efforts begin, the criminal investigation into the shooting continues, and additional public information is expected to be released through official channels as proceedings move forward.
