Weekend Traffic Outlook for Indianapolis

As we move through Saturday, February 7, 2026, commuters on the northeast side of Indianapolis should prepare for continued shifts in traffic patterns as the massive Clear Path 465 project enters its final year of major construction. While the project is now more than 80% complete, significant work remains on the reconfigured I-69/I-465 interchange, leading to several long-term restrictions that will affect weekend travel.

Major Highway and Interchange Updates

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) reports that while mainline I-465 is on track for a spring 2026 completion, several key ramps remain closed to facilitate the final stages of bridge work and lane configuration. Motorists should be aware of the following:

  • Northeast I-465/I-69 Interchange: Expect intermittent lane restrictions throughout the weekend. The ramps from 56th Street to northbound I-465 and from Allisonville Road to eastbound I-465 remain closed as part of long-term construction.
  • I-465 Lane Closures: Crews are scheduled for wall repairs between River Road and East 56th Street. While the primary overnight work is slated for earlier in the week, temporary signage and shifted lanes remain in place, requiring reduced speeds through the corridor.
  • Binford Boulevard: The ramp from northbound Binford Boulevard to westbound I-465 remains restricted. Detours are marked using 75th and 82nd Streets.

Local Arteries and Washington Street Closures

Significant disruptions continue on the city's west side due to the ongoing IndyGo Blue Line infrastructure improvements and drainage projects. Most notably, Washington Street is currently closed between Belmont Avenue and Harding Street. This closure is expected to remain in place until May 2026 to allow for the installation of new storm sewer trunk lines.

  • Westbound Washington Street Detour: Motorists traveling west are being diverted south on Harding Street to I-70 West, then north via the Holt Road exit.
  • Little Eagle Creek: Bridge reconstruction on Washington Street over Little Eagle Creek is nearing its final phase (estimated completion Q1 2026). Drivers should expect localized flagging and one-lane operations in the immediate vicinity of the bridge.
  • White River Innovation District: Work continues around the former GM Stamping Plant site west of downtown. Construction of the new Henry Street bridge and associated trail infrastructure may cause minor delays on Kentucky Avenue and adjacent streets.

Public Transit Alerts

IndyGo reports that the Purple Line, which has been in full service since late 2024, is operating on its standard Saturday schedule. Riders are reminded that several routes on the west side are currently detoured due to the Washington Street sewer work. Check the MyKey app or official transit alerts for real-time bus tracking and stop relocations. Transit officials recommend allowing an extra 15 to 20 minutes for cross-town trips involving the Blue Line corridor.
