Morning Traffic Overview

Commuters in Indianapolis should prepare for a mix of ongoing infrastructure projects and cold temperatures this Thursday, January 22, 2026. While major highways like I-70 remain largely clear of new incidents this morning, long-term construction projects continue to dictate traffic patterns across the city's south and northeast sides. Drivers are encouraged to allow an extra 10–15 minutes for their morning routes, particularly when navigating surface street detours in the downtown area.

Major Artery Updates

  • I-65 Safety & Efficiency Project: Construction continues on the southeast side between the I-465 interchange and the I-65/I-70 overpass. Two lanes remain open in each direction, but lane shifts and narrow shoulders are in place. Motorists should exercise caution as crews work to add travel lanes using the existing shoulders.
  • Clear Path 465 (Northeast Side): On the city's northeast side, the I-465 and I-69 interchange project is nearing its final stages. While most major bridge work is complete, expect intermittent lane and ramp restrictions as finishing touches continue toward a planned summer completion.
  • I-465 Southwest: Minor delays are reported near the I-465/I-70 interchange on the southwest side due to ongoing pavement and shoulder rehabilitation work.

Local Roadworks & Closures

Significant impacts remain on Washington Street due to the Blue Line BRT project. At the intersection of Washington Street and College Avenue, northbound closures and lane restrictions at Pine Street are causing heavy congestion during peak hours. A single lane remains open in each direction for eastbound and westbound traffic. Northbound motorists are currently detoured via I-70 West to the Fletcher Avenue exit.

Additionally, 18th Street is closed this week for utility work, which is expected to last through the end of the month, affecting access to the IU Health vicinity.

IndyGo Public Transport Alerts

  • Route 90 (Red Line): The Red Line remains on detour near Fountain Square. The Pleasant Run and Raymond Street stations are currently closed, with Route 90 sharing bus stops with Route 13 on Raymond Street.
  • Routes 90 & 92 Detours: Due to the 18th Street closure, these routes are operating on an adjusted path, and the IU Health Station is temporarily closed.
  • Fare Update: Riders are reminded that the standard regular service fare is now $2.75 as of the start of the year.

Weather & Road Conditions

Today's weather is fair but cold, with temperatures hovering around 21°F. While roads are dry this morning, the city is monitoring a significant winter storm system expected to arrive this weekend. Commuters should ensure their vehicles are winter-ready today before heavier snowfall and arctic air arrive on Saturday.
