A fatal Sunday morning collision on U.S. 52

One person was killed and three others were hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash Sunday morning in Hancock County, authorities said. Deputies were called at about 7:45 a.m. to the area of 2800 West U.S. 52, where a head-on collision involving a Chevrolet Equinox and a Ford Escape was reported.

The person who died was identified as 69-year-old Peggy Brune, who was driving the Ford Escape. She was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where she was later pronounced dead.

What investigators say happened

Investigators said the Escape was traveling eastbound on U.S. 52 while the Equinox was traveling westbound. As the vehicles approached each other, the Equinox crossed the center line into the eastbound lane, leading to the crash.

  • Vehicle 1: 2019 Chevrolet Equinox driven by 66-year-old Michael L. Wilcox

  • Vehicle 2: 2012 Ford Escape driven by 69-year-old Peggy Brune

  • Passenger: Michael A. Wilcox, 45, was also in the Equinox

The driver and passenger in the Equinox were taken to the hospital with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.

Alcohol and drugs not believed to be factors

Authorities said drugs and alcohol were not considered factors in the crash. Investigators also said the driver of the Equinox was cooperating as the case is reviewed.

The crash remains under investigation, and officials have not released additional details on contributing circumstances beyond the reported lane departure.

Why this stretch of roadway draws attention after serious crashes

U.S. 52 is a frequently traveled corridor through parts of Hancock County, and head-on crashes can be particularly severe on two-lane highways when vehicles cross the center line. Investigations in fatal crashes typically review roadway conditions, vehicle speed, driver impairment indicators, mechanical issues, and potential distractions.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information that could help investigators is generally encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
