Winter Weather and Major Exit Closures Impact Wednesday Morning Commute

Commuters in Indianapolis are facing a challenging drive this Wednesday, January 28, 2026, as a combination of winter weather hazards and active construction projects creates significant delays across the metro area. With reports of ice on major interstates and several exit closures, drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time and check their routes before heading out.

Interstate Hazards and Closures

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and local traffic services have flagged several high-priority incidents this morning:

  • I-465 Westbound: Motorists are reporting ice on the roadway between South Arlington Avenue and Exit 52 (South Emerson Avenue). Maintenance crews are active in the area, but slick spots remain a concern during the morning freeze.
  • I-465 Southbound: The exit ramp at Mile Point 48.5, located between East Raymond Road and Old US 421, is currently closed due to a traffic hazard. Commuters should seek alternate routes to access the southeast side of the city.
  • I-465 Northbound: The right lane of the exit ramp between Old US 421 and US 52 is closed for foundation removal work. Drivers should expect merging delays in this sector.
  • Clear Path 465: Construction on the northeast side continues, with the project now approximately 80% complete. While progress is steady, width limits of 12 feet remain in effect for the ramp from I-465 Eastbound to Binford Boulevard.

Downtown and North Split Restrictions

Long-term construction persists at the I-65/I-70 North and South Splits. The I-65 Northbound ramp to I-70 Westbound at the South Split remains reduced to a single lane with an 11-foot width restriction. Additionally, the I-70 Eastbound ramp to I-65 Southbound is experiencing left-lane closures, which may bottleneck traffic during peak morning hours. Commuters heading through the downtown core should maintain awareness of narrowed lanes and frequent equipment movement.

IndyGo Public Transit Alerts

Public transportation users should be prepared for significant service interruptions today. Due to the extreme cold and recent snowfall sweeping across Central Indiana, IndyGo has issued several alerts:

  • System-wide Delays: Major service impacts are expected throughout the morning, with potential gaps in schedules. Riders are advised to dress warmly and use real-time tracking tools to avoid long waits at outdoor stops.
  • Route 90 (Red Line): The Red Line remains on detour near Fountain Square, closing the Pleasant Run and Raymond Street stations. Riders should use the temporary stops located on Raymond Street. Additionally, the ongoing closure of 18th Street for utility work has forced a detour for both the Red Line and Route 92, effectively closing the IU Health Station for the duration of the work.

For those traveling north toward Hamilton County, be aware of ongoing upgrades on US 31 between 216th and 286th Streets. Intersections are being converted to overpasses, which may result in temporary flaggers or lane shifts near the Westfield and Carmel areas.
