IMPD Investigates Officer After Viral Video Shows Death Threat Toward 17-Year-Old Anti-ICE Protester

Investigation opened after recorded encounter outside anti-ICE demonstration
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has opened an internal review after video circulated online showing an officer threatening a 17-year-old during a traffic stop connected to an anti-ICE protest. In the recording, an officer is heard telling the teen, “I will f---ing kill you,” as multiple officers surround the vehicle.
IMPD has acknowledged that language captured in the video “does not reflect” the department’s standards and said the incident was recorded on body-worn camera, which is being reviewed as part of the department’s investigation.
Police say stop followed reports of weapons tied to planned protest activity
In a public account of the incident, IMPD said officers had received information that students may be armed at a planned protest and began monitoring the area. Police said they observed a juvenile male enter a vehicle with a firearm and initiated a traffic stop after the vehicle left the area.
IMPD said officers located a loaded handgun within reach during the stop and arrested a juvenile for dangerous possession of a firearm.
What the video shows—and what remains unresolved
The viral video has prompted questions about police conduct during protest-related enforcement, particularly when minors are involved. The available footage captures the moment of the threat but does not, on its own, establish a complete timeline of events leading up to the stop, including what officers knew before initiating contact, what commands were issued, and how officers assessed risk.
IMPD has indicated body-camera recordings exist and are part of the review. The department has not publicly released the full body-camera video in connection with this investigation.
Union response and calls for accountability
The Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police president, Rick Snyder, publicly defended the officer’s use of “blunt language” while also supporting a full review of the encounter. Separately, a parent of one of the juveniles involved has called for accountability and for release of all body-camera footage tied to the incident.
Broader context: immigration enforcement tensions and protest policing
The episode comes amid heightened local debate over immigration enforcement and public demonstrations in central Indiana. In recent days, public officials and community groups have discussed what role local law enforcement should play when immigration enforcement becomes a focal point for protests, and how public safety decisions are made around large gatherings involving students.
- IMPD says it is reviewing the officer’s conduct and body-camera evidence.
- Police report a loaded handgun was found within reach inside the vehicle, leading to an arrest.
- The video’s language has intensified scrutiny of policing tactics during protest-related stops involving minors.
IMPD has stated the language heard on the viral recording does not reflect department standards, and that the encounter is under internal review.
The department has not announced a timeline for completing its investigation or whether disciplinary action will result.
