Holiday Service Adjustments for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

In observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday, January 19, 2026, most City of Indianapolis and Marion County administrative offices will be closed. Residents are advised that public services, including transit and sanitation, will operate on modified schedules to honor the federal holiday. Normal business operations for city departments are expected to resume on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. Citizens are encouraged to use online portals for non-emergency requests during this time.

Public Transit Schedule: Saturday Service Level

IndyGo has announced that all fixed-route and IndyGo Access services will operate on a Saturday schedule on Monday, Jan. 19. Riders should plan accordingly as frequency may be reduced on certain routes across the network. The following facility hours will also be in effect for the holiday:

  • Customer Care Center: Operating from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Care Center Desk (Julia M. Carson Transit Center): Open from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Fixed Routes: Standard Saturday schedules apply throughout the service day.

Sanitation and Recycling: "Slide" Schedule in Effect

The Department of Public Works (DPW) reminds residents that trash, heavy trash, and curbside recycling collections will follow a "slide" schedule for the week of January 19. This protocol is triggered by the holiday and ensures that all residential services remain operational, albeit delayed by one business day:

  • Monday routes will be collected on Tuesday, January 20.
  • Tuesday routes will be collected on Wednesday, January 21.
  • Wednesday routes will be collected on Thursday, January 22.
  • Thursday routes will be collected on Friday, January 23.
  • Friday routes will be collected on Saturday, January 24.

Official Notice: Public Library Hearing on Right-of-Way

The Board of Trustees of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library has issued an official notice for a public hearing to be held on January 26, 2026. The hearing will address the granting of a fee simple right-of-way to IndyGo for real property at the East Washington Branch Library. Citizens are invited to attend and speak at the East 38th Street Branch, located at 5420 E. 38th Street, starting at 6:30 p.m. This notice serves as the formal public review period required for the transfer of public property interests.

Public Health Advisory: Updated Childhood Vaccine Guidelines

The Marion County Public Health Department and local medical experts are alerting families to recent changes in the national childhood vaccine schedule. Following updated guidance issued on January 5, certain immunizations—including those for RSV and Hepatitis—are now categorized under "shared clinical decision-making" rather than universal recommendations for all ages. Health officials at the IU Indianapolis Fairbanks School of Public Health suggest that parents consult directly with their pediatricians to ensure children remain up to date on all necessary protections during the winter season, as specific eligibility may now depend on high-risk factors.
