Large overnight response at Hornet Avenue church

Indianapolis Fire Department crews spent nearly five hours battling a late-night fire that damaged a church building in Beech Grove, including a partial roof collapse that forced firefighters to withdraw from the interior and operate from outside.

The fire was reported late Friday night, and firefighters were dispatched at about 10:43 p.m. to the Independent Nazarene Church in the 5100 block of East Hornet Avenue. Firefighters arriving on scene reported flames in the roof area and heavy smoke conditions.

Interior operations halted after collapse risk increased

As the incident developed, sections of the roof partially collapsed. That structural failure prompted crews to evacuate the building and shift tactics to a defensive operation, concentrating on extinguishment from exterior positions. In a defensive posture, firefighters typically prioritize keeping crews out of collapse zones and limiting fire spread, while using aerial devices and exterior hose streams to knock down fire and cool structural components.

A partial roof collapse led crews to evacuate and continue the attack from outside the building.

Timeline: control to full extinguishment

Command reported that it took about three hours to bring the blaze under control, followed by roughly two additional hours to complete extinguishment and overhaul operations. Overhaul is the labor-intensive process of opening concealed spaces to locate hot spots, preventing rekindles, and ensuring remaining structural elements are stable.

Fire officials reported no injuries. Officials did not immediately provide an estimate of damage or indicate whether the building was occupied at the time the fire began.

Investigation underway into cause and origin

Fire investigators are working to determine the fire’s cause and point of origin. For fires involving roof and attic spaces, investigators commonly assess electrical systems, mechanical equipment, and any recent maintenance or renovation activity, while also evaluating the potential role of accidental ignition sources or intentional setting. No cause has been released.

What happens next

  • Investigators will document the scene and evaluate potential ignition sources, including utilities and building systems.

  • Structural assessments will determine whether the damaged roof and interior areas can be safely entered for further examination.

  • Officials may release additional details as the investigation progresses, including any findings on cause, damage extent, and building status.

The incident remains under investigation, and officials have not announced a timetable for final findings.
