A stand-alone pantry building replaces a cramped pop-up setup

The Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center has opened a new, stand-alone food pantry in West Indianapolis, a change intended to expand service capacity, increase access to fresh and refrigerated items, and add more distribution days. The pantry operates in a grocery-style format that allows visitors to select items that fit their household needs.

The new pantry is located at 2102 W. Morris St., a short distance from the neighborhood center’s main facility. The location adds dedicated space for food distribution and storage, addressing constraints that previously limited the center’s ability to keep refrigerated and frozen products on hand and to serve larger crowds consistently.

Refrigeration, broader selection, and more consistent access

With added refrigeration and a larger footprint, the pantry can stock a wider range of perishable staples such as dairy, eggs and meat, alongside produce, shelf-stable goods, and basic household items like toiletries and cleaning supplies. Weekly inventory varies based on availability and deliveries.

Mary Rigg’s pantry is structured to reduce barriers: there are no eligibility requirements to visit, and clients are permitted to shop up to once per week. The center has also established partnerships with regional food-assistance organizations and participates in The Emergency Food Assistance Program, which helps move federally supported food into local distribution channels.

Hours expand beyond the previous Wednesday schedule

Mary Rigg’s posted schedule includes midweek hours and evening access once per month, with additional weekday openings added in late winter and early spring:

  • First Wednesday of each month: 5:30–7 p.m.
  • All other Wednesdays: 12:30–2 p.m.
  • Mondays: 10 a.m.–noon starting Feb. 16, 2026
  • Tuesdays: 1–3 p.m. starting March 2, 2026

Consolidation of neighborhood resources after a west-side closure

The expansion comes as west-side food-assistance capacity adjusts to the closure of another long-running pantry in the area. Mary Rigg has combined resources and distribution efforts with the recently closed Billie’s Food Pantry, a shift intended to maintain continuity of service and preserve access to key food-assistance streams for neighborhood residents.

Rising demand in central Indiana frames the expansion

Local food providers have reported increasing demand in recent years, tracking broader pressures from housing and food costs. Within Mary Rigg’s own operations, the center has documented growth in pantry traffic and has described the new facility as a response to sustained increases in need and participation.

The Mary Rigg Food Pantry is designed as a walk-through, grocery-style space where visitors choose items directly, rather than receiving pre-packed boxes.

Parking is available on-site and on nearby streets, and visitors are encouraged to bring bags to carry groceries.
