Northeast I-465 Congestion and Westside Washington Street Closures: Thursday Traffic Update

Morning Commute Overview for Thursday, February 5, 2026
Good morning, Indianapolis. As we navigate this first Thursday of February, commuters are facing a complex morning drive characterized by significant interstate restrictions on the northeast side and major utility-related closures on the west side. While the multi-year Clear Path 465 project is nearing its final phases, several critical arteries remain under heavy construction as the city prepares for future transit and infrastructure upgrades.
Major Interstate Alerts: I-465 and I-69
The Clear Path 465 project continues to be the primary focus for northeast side commuters. Currently, the project is approximately 80% complete, but drivers should expect intermittent lane and ramp restrictions throughout the day. Key updates for this morning include:
- I-465 Westbound: Real-time reports indicate heavy congestion and periods of standstill traffic between East 71st Street and Westfield Boulevard. Commuters should allow an extra 15 to 20 minutes if traveling through this corridor.
- Interchange Progress: Work continues on the reconfigured I-69/I-465 interchange. While many new bridges are now open, watch for narrow lanes and shifted traffic patterns near the 82nd Street ramps.
- Northside Upgrades: Further north, expect moderate delays on US 31 in Hamilton County between 216th and 286th streets as INDOT continues safety upgrades and interchange construction.
Local Arterial Closures and Detours
Significant disruptions are active on major city streets due to the Blue Line bus rapid transit project and municipal drainage improvements:
- Washington Street: A total closure remains in effect on Washington Street between Belmont Avenue and Harding Street. This is necessary for the installation of new storm sewer trunk lines and is expected to last until May 2026. Westbound motorists are being detoured south on Harding Street to I-70 West, while eastbound traffic is routed south on Southeastern Avenue and north on State Avenue.
- Fountain Square Area: New drainage improvement projects are beginning this quarter around the intersections of Virginia Avenue, Prospect Avenue, Shelby Street, and Morris Street. Expect localized lane shifts and construction crews in the roadway.
- White River Infrastructure: Near the former GM Stamping Plant, work on the Henry Street bridge and related roadways continues to impact local traffic patterns west of downtown.
IndyGo Transit and Public Transport
Public transit riders should be aware of ongoing schedule modifications and detours. Route 8 continues to operate on a modified daily schedule to accommodate the Washington Street construction. Additionally, minor timing adjustments are in effect for the Red Line (90) and Purple Line (92) to improve schedule adherence during these infrastructure projects. Note that a significant frequency increase for Route 26 is slated to begin this coming Sunday, February 8.
Commuter Safety Reminder
With winter conditions still impacting the region, INDOT and local law enforcement remind drivers to stay alert in work zones. Reduced speed limits remain in effect on I-465, and drivers are encouraged to put down mobile devices to navigate the frequent lane shifts safely. If you encounter icy patches on side streets during the early morning hours, please increase your following distance.
