Health Advisory: 2025 Community Assessment Results

The Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) has formally released the results of its 2025 Community Assessment. Based on surveys from nearly 5,000 residents, the department identifies mental health and wellbeing as the top priority for the city. Key findings currently under review by health officials include:

  • Approximately 25% of residents have been diagnosed with depression, while 19% report suffering from anxiety.
  • Access to healthcare remains a significant barrier, with one in five residents forgoing medical visits last year due to prohibitive costs.
  • Firearm violence continues to impact the community, with one-quarter of residents reporting that gun violence has personally affected their families or neighborhoods.

Dr. Virginia A. Caine, director of MCPHD, emphasized that these results will serve as a roadmap for policy changes and resource allocation throughout 2026 to improve the quality of life for all Indianapolis residents.

Infrastructure Alert: Washington Street Closures

Ongoing construction for the IndyGo Blue Line continues to impact traffic patterns along Washington Street this week. Motorists should be aware of the following active restrictions:

  • Washington Street remains closed to through traffic in the westbound lanes between Belmont Avenue and Harding Street. This closure is expected to persist through May 2026 to facilitate the installation of new storm sewer trunk lines.
  • Eastbound traffic on Washington Street between Southeastern and State avenues is currently detoured south to Southeastern Avenue as sewer construction continues.
  • Reduced lane capacity and curb ramp improvements are active between West Street and Capitol Avenue. Pedestrian accessibility in these areas is limited while crews finalize sidewalk and station upgrades.
