Official Notice: Winter Storm Emergency and Municipal Service Updates

State of Emergency Declared: Severe Winter Storm Impact
Governor Mike Braun has officially declared a state of emergency for Indianapolis and Marion County as a major winter storm continues to impact central Indiana. A Winter Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect until 7:00 a.m. on Monday, January 26, 2026. Local residents should prepare for significant snow accumulations between 7 and 12 inches through Sunday evening. Additionally, a cold weather advisory is active, with wind chills expected to drop as low as 20 degrees below zero. Public safety officials strongly urge residents to stay off the roads today unless travel is absolutely necessary for health or safety.
Department of Public Works: Snow Operations and Service Adjustments
The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) has deployed full crews on 12-hour rotating shifts to manage snow and ice removal. Operations are currently focused on "Priority One" routes, which include major thoroughfares, bridge decks, overpasses, and streets serving hospitals and fire stations. Due to extreme sub-zero temperatures, salt application is currently less effective; DPW crews are adjusting operations as conditions evolve to focus on clearing heavy accumulation.
- Waste Collection Update: All trash and recycling services scheduled for Monday, January 26, 2026, have been canceled. This cancellation allows DPW and private contractors to prioritize snow removal efforts.
- Service Transition: Residents are reminded that as of January 1, 2026, waste collection in several districts has transitioned to Lakeshore Recycling Services (LRS). Residents should check their new provider schedules for updated weather-related makeup dates.
Public Health and Winter Contingency Plan
The Indianapolis Winter Contingency Plan is fully active and will remain so through March 31, 2026. This plan ensures that overflow shelters remain open and accessible during life-threatening cold events. The Office of Public Health and Safety is coordinating with local shelters to provide relief to those experiencing homelessness. Residents are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors and ensure that pets are brought indoors to avoid exposure to the extreme wind chills.
City Meeting Schedules and Closures
Due to the weather emergency, several public facilities, including the Indianapolis Public Library and the Indianapolis Zoo, have announced cancellations for Sunday, January 25. Residents should note the following upcoming official dates:
- Information Technology Board: Scheduled for Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. in the City-County Building.
- Environmental Sustainability Committee: Scheduled for Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
- Full City-County Council Meeting: The next regular full council meeting is set for Monday, February 2, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. in the Public Assembly Room.
