Crash reported near a major east-side corridor

A male pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle Monday morning near the intersection of East Washington Street and South Kitley Avenue on Indianapolis’ east side. The crash was reported at about 8 a.m. in an area close to where East Washington Street meets South Shadeland Avenue, a heavily traveled arterial with multiple turning movements and nearby commercial activity.

Officers arriving at the scene found the pedestrian in critical condition. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. As of the latest available police information, his identity has not been released.

Driver remained at the scene; investigation continues

Police said the driver involved stayed at the location and assisted in providing medical aid to the pedestrian while first responders arrived. Investigators have not publicly released additional details about the driver, potential impairment, speed, or any pending charges, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Preliminary findings indicate the pedestrian was walking northbound on Kitley Avenue when the vehicle struck him from the east. Police have not clarified whether the pedestrian was within a marked crossing at the time of impact or described the vehicle involved.

Traffic impacts and safety considerations

Police urged motorists and pedestrians to use alternate routes while the crash was investigated. The intersection sits along East Washington Street, a corridor that serves as a key east-west route and routinely carries commuter traffic, commercial deliveries, and transit activity. In that environment, early-morning visibility conditions, turning traffic, and multiple lanes can complicate interactions between vehicles and pedestrians, particularly outside of protected crossings.

  • Crash location: East Washington Street and South Kitley Avenue (east side of Indianapolis).

  • Time reported: about 8 a.m. Monday.

  • Victim: male pedestrian; pronounced dead at a hospital.

  • Driver status: remained at the scene and rendered aid, police said.

What remains unanswered

Authorities have not released the pedestrian’s name, the vehicle description, or a timeline for when additional findings may be shared. The investigation is expected to address the pedestrian’s exact path, the driver’s direction of travel and actions immediately before impact, roadway conditions, and whether any traffic-control devices or crosswalk infrastructure played a role.

Police have said additional information is being limited while the investigation remains active.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information that could assist investigators is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
