City-County Council Committee Session

The Metropolitan and Economic Development Committee of the Indianapolis City-County Council is scheduled to convene today, Monday, March 9, 2026. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the City-County Building, located at 200 E. Washington St., in the Public Assembly Room. The committee is tasked with reviewing legislative proposals that impact the city's growth and neighborhood stability. Key items on today’s agenda include discussions on urban planning, zoning modifications, and land use policies. Furthermore, the committee will evaluate progress on public housing initiatives and code enforcement strategies aimed at maintaining historic preservation standards. Members of the public are invited to attend and provide testimony regarding economic development projects currently under consideration for various districts.

Infrastructure and Traffic Advisories

The Department of Public Works and IndyGo have issued updates regarding several major transportation projects currently affecting travel through the downtown and near-eastside corridors:

  • Washington Street Closure: A significant segment of Washington Street remains closed between Southeastern and State avenues. This closure is part of the Blue Line infrastructure development and is expected to continue through late 2027. Local bus routes are currently operating on detours, with temporary stops established near the intersections of Washington and Cruse streets.
  • I-465 Ramp Restrictions: The entrance ramp to I-465 northbound at 56th Street and Shadeland Avenue in Lawrence is currently closed for long-term construction. This restriction is slated to remain in effect until June 30, 2026. Motorists are advised to utilize alternative routes through the northeast quadrant of the city.
  • Local Utility and Maintenance Work: Pedestrian diversions are in place on North Dunn Street for facade maintenance and masonry cleaning at the Poplars Building. The eastern sidewalk and adjacent parking lanes are restricted through the end of the day.

Public Health Advisory: Awareness Month

The City of Indianapolis officially recognizes March 2026 as National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Health officials and local advocacy groups are urging residents to prioritize early detection and screening. Colorectal cancer remains a significant health concern in Indiana, particularly among underserved populations who face higher mortality rates. Throughout this month, local health departments and community clinics are hosting educational events and providing resources to help uninsured residents access screening kits. Early intervention is critical to improving survival rates and preventing the progression of the disease.

Park Maintenance and Capital Improvements

Indy Parks continues its historic 2026 construction season, with work progressing at nearly 20% of the city’s park locations. The MLK Gateway Project is currently in its final construction phase, with a scheduled completion date in April 2026. This project honors the legacies of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy with elevated site amenities. Additionally, ground-clearing activities for new playgrounds and trail improvements at Canterbury and Robey Parks are active this week as part of a system-wide $150 million investment initiative.
