Emergency Disaster Declaration and Travel Warning

Mayor Joe Hogsett has officially declared a local weather-related disaster emergency for Marion County following a significant winter storm that deposited over 11 inches of snow across the region. As of Tuesday, January 27, 2026, Indianapolis remains under a Red Travel Warning, the highest level of local advisory. Under this declaration, travel is restricted to emergency management workers, first responders, and essential healthcare personnel. Residents are strongly urged to remain at home to allow city crews to continue snow removal operations and to avoid dangerous wind chills, which are forecasted to reach between -15 and -30 degrees through Wednesday morning.

City-County Meeting Notices

  • Information Technology Board: A scheduled meeting of the Information Technology Board will take place today, Tuesday, January 27, at 9:30 a.m. in the City-County Building. The board is set to review major IT contracts and evaluate municipal technology standards.
  • Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission (IHPC): The IHPC Administrative Hearing previously scheduled for this afternoon has been noted with a "No Docket" status, meaning no cases are currently set for review during this session.
  • Statehouse Legislative Activity: Due to the closure of state offices on Monday, several legislative committee meetings originally scheduled for early in the week have been moved to Tuesday, January 27.

Trash Collection and Public Works

The Department of Public Works reminds residents that as of January 2026, trash collection services for areas formerly serviced by Republic or Waste Management have transitioned to Lakeshore Recycling Services (LRS). While emergency weather conditions may impact collection timing this week, residents should continue to follow the new LRS schedule once the travel warning is lifted. Additionally, the city continues to monitor the Fountain Square area for drainage improvements as part of the ongoing infrastructure project to alleviate historical flooding.

Infrastructure and Traffic Restrictions

Motorists are advised of several standing infrastructure restrictions that remain in effect despite the current weather emergency. A width limit of 12 feet is currently active for the ramp from eastbound I-465 to Binford Boulevard; this restriction is expected to remain in place until January 30. Furthermore, a gross weight limit of 300,000 pounds remains in effect for the ramps connecting US 31 to I-465 in both directions. Drivers are encouraged to check official traffic portals for the latest road clearance updates before attempting any essential travel.
