Saturday Traffic and Commute Overview

As we move into the third weekend of February, Indianapolis commuters should prepare for a mix of long-term construction projects and recent service changes. While overall traffic volume is expected to be moderate for a Saturday, significant work on the city’s transit infrastructure and major highway repairs continue to dictate the flow of travel through Marion County. Lead editors at indianapolis.news advise motorists to allow extra time when traversing the downtown corridor and the western I-465 loop.

Highway Construction and Arterial Updates

On the I-465 loop, drivers should be aware of ongoing long-term construction between mile markers 25.1 and 26.1. Recent traffic monitoring has indicated occasional congestion and standstill traffic on the eastbound lanes, particularly between 96th Street and Michigan Road. Motorists heading toward the Zionsville corridor should also watch for lane restrictions and the potential for slowed traffic near the I-865 interchange due to periodic maintenance and debris recovery.

In the downtown area, 9th Street remains a primary focus of city roadworks. Following the extension of work earlier this week, the roadway closure on 9th Street continues westward from Louisiana Street, past Indiana Street, toward Mississippi Street. While local businesses remain accessible, through-traffic is diverted. Drivers are encouraged to follow posted signage to avoid the active construction zone and utilize temporary parking areas designated by the city.

IndyGo Transit Alerts and Detours

Public transport users are adjusting to several major service updates that took effect this month. The most notable change is for Route 26, which now operates with a 30-minute frequency, seven days a week, providing more consistent service between downtown and the north side. However, several construction-related detours remain active today:

  • Route 8 (Washington Street): Due to the ongoing construction of the Blue Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line, Route 8 is operating on a new daily schedule with detours between Belmont Avenue and Harding Street.
  • Washington Street Closures: Partial lane closures are active on Washington Street between Southeastern and State Avenues. Westbound riders should check for temporary stop placements as several permanent stops are currently bypassed.
  • Route 3: A revised detour via White River Parkway is in effect, impacting travel near West Michigan Street.
  • Red Line (Route 90): The Red Line remains on detour near Fountain Square. While the route has returned to Raymond Street, the permanent platforms are closed; riders must access the line at temporary stops along the roadway.

Regional Travel Notes

For those planning to travel south of Indianapolis today, please be advised that cleanup efforts are still underway in the Bloomington area following the severe weather events of February 19. While major thoroughfares like I-69 are fully operational, there may be localized delays or restricted access on secondary roads in Monroe County near the airport and west side residential areas. Extra caution is advised when traveling through these zones to allow utility crews to complete repairs.
