Monday Morning Traffic and Transit Update

Commuters in Indianapolis should prepare for a volatile start to the week this Monday, February 23, 2026. A combination of severe weather warnings and major ongoing construction projects on the city's northeast side is expected to significantly impact travel times throughout the morning and evening rush hours.

Weather Alert: Severe Storms and Dense Fog

The National Weather Service has issued a high-impact weather alert for central Indiana today. While the morning began with dense fog across portions of the metro area, reducing visibility to less than a quarter-mile, the primary concern for the afternoon commute is the risk of severe storms. Forecasts indicate that intense storm systems are moving toward the city, with the potential for tornadoes and damaging winds. Drivers are urged to monitor local weather updates and have multiple ways to receive emergency warnings before heading home.

Major Roadworks: Clear Path 465 and Ramp Closures

The "Clear Path 465" project continues to be the most significant factor for motorists on the northeast side. Although the project is more than 80 percent complete, mainline construction remains intensive as crews work toward a spring completion date. Drivers should be aware of several key long-term closures currently in effect:

  • I-465 Northbound: The entrance ramp at 56th Street and North Shadeland Avenue in Lawrence is closed for reconstruction. This closure is scheduled to remain in place through June 30, 2026.
  • Allisonville Road: The ramp from Allisonville Road to Eastbound I-465 remains closed as part of the major interchange reconfiguration.
  • Community Hospital North: Patients and visitors to the Community Hospital North campus should plan for additional travel time due to persistent lane restrictions and traffic pattern changes in the immediate vicinity.

IndyGo Transit Service Adjustments

Public transport users should take note of several service detours and schedule adjustments that were recently implemented to accommodate ongoing infrastructure projects:

  • Route 8 (Washington Street): A new detour via White River Parkway is now in effect to support construction for the future Blue Line Bus Rapid Transit corridor.
  • Route 3 (Michigan Street): Riders on the west side should note that the Route 3 detour has changed to utilize White River Parkway.
  • Red Line (Route 90): The Red Line continues its detour near Fountain Square, with the Raymond Street platforms remaining closed. Temporary stops are available along Raymond Street for boarding.
  • Route 26: On a positive note for commuters, Route 26 now operates with an improved 30-minute frequency, seven days a week, providing more reliable service between the downtown transit center and the north side.

Motorists are advised to maintain a safe following distance and remain vigilant for emergency vehicles and construction crews, especially during periods of heavy rain or reduced visibility expected later today.
