Winter Weather Advisory: Slick Roads This Morning

Commuters heading out this Tuesday, February 3, 2026, should prepare for hazardous driving conditions across the Indianapolis metropolitan area. A weather impact alert is currently in effect as overnight and early morning snowfall has left many area roads slick and potentially dangerous. Local officials warn that these conditions may disrupt the morning commute and school schedules. The Indianapolis Department of Public Works is monitoring major thoroughfares, but drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution on secondary connector streets and residential roads, which are more likely to remain icy during the peak travel window.

Major Closure in Fountain Square

A significant long-term disruption began this week in the Fountain Square neighborhood that will heavily impact local travel today. Shelby Street is now fully closed to both vehicles and cyclists between Morris and Prospect streets. This closure is part of a critical drainage and utility relocation project led by Citizens Energy Group and the city’s Department of Public Works.

  • Detour Routes: Northbound and southbound traffic is being diverted from Shelby Street toward Keystone Avenue via Prospect and Raymond streets. Eastbound motorists are encouraged to use East Street and Virginia Avenue to bypass the work zone.
  • Pedestrian and Cyclist Access: While sidewalks along Shelby Street remain open, cyclists are being rerouted to the Pleasant Run Trail and Spruce Street.

I-465 and I-69 Construction Updates

Work continues on the "Clear Path 465" project on the northeast side of the city. While the project is nearing 80% completion, several active restrictions are in place today that will cause delays:

  • Lane Blocks: Two right lanes are currently blocked on I-465 westbound between Ditch Road and US 421 due to ongoing bridge construction.
  • Speed Enforcement: Automated speed enforcement remains active in the construction zones between I-69 and East 71st Street. The speed limit is strictly set at 55 mph, and enforcement is particularly high during weekday hours from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Congestion Alerts: Commuters should expect heavy congestion and potential standstill traffic on I-465 southbound between the I-69 interchange and North Shadeland Avenue.

IndyGo and Public Transit Alerts

The construction in Fountain Square has forced a significant detour for the IndyGo Red Line (Route 90). The bus is currently rerouting to the west, resulting in the temporary closure of the Pleasant Run and Raymond platforms. Riders should instead utilize the shared Route 13 bus stops on Raymond Street. Furthermore, minor timing adjustments are in effect for Routes 5, 6, 8, 10, and the Purple Line to account for construction detours and the winter weather. Looking ahead, IndyGo has announced that all rides will be free tomorrow, February 4, in honor of Transit Equity Day.
