Morning Arteries and I-465 Lane Restrictions

Commuters heading onto the I-465 loop this morning should be prepared for several active construction zones. Most notably, bridge construction work on the westbound side of I-465 between Ditch Road and US 421 continues to impact overnight and early morning travel. Motorists should note that two left lanes are restricted during the late-night and early-morning windows; while lanes are scheduled to reopen by 5:00 AM, lingering congestion is common as crews clear the area. Additionally, the long-term closure of the entrance ramp from North Shadeland Avenue and East 56th Street to northbound I-465 remains in effect, requiring drivers in the Lawrence area to utilize alternative routes such as Binford Boulevard or 71st Street.

Clear Path 465 and Northeast Side Delays

The massive Clear Path 465 project is entering a critical phase on the northeast side. Demolition of the former bridge from southbound I-69 to southbound I-465 over Binford Boulevard is currently underway. This may lead to intermittent lane closures and shifted traffic patterns near the I-69 interchange. Drivers frequently using Binford Boulevard should watch for overhead work and potential debris-clearing activities that could cause sudden slowdowns during the peak morning hours. The new ramps in this corridor have adjusted the decision points for drivers exiting toward Allisonville Road, so extra attention is advised for those navigating the new lane configurations.

Downtown Street Closures and Blue Line Work

Inner-city travel is heavily impacted by the ongoing Blue Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) construction. Washington Street is currently restricted between Southeastern and State Avenues. All eastbound lanes in this segment are closed to through traffic, while a single westbound lane remains open. This closure is expected to last through the spring, and commuters are encouraged to use Michigan or New York Streets as primary east-west alternatives. Furthermore, utility work near the Fountain Square area has caused localized disruptions, contributing to heavier-than-usual volume on Raymond Street and Prospect Street.

IndyGo Transit Alerts

IndyGo riders should be aware of several route adjustments and detours effective today:

  • Red Line: The Fountain Square and Pleasant Run Parkway stations remain closed due to construction detours.
  • Route 8: Operating on a modified daily schedule to accommodate the Washington Street lane closures.
  • Route 26: Now operating at an increased 30-minute frequency seven days a week, offering better connectivity between Keystone at the Crossing and the Transit Center.
  • Route 3 & 5: Currently on detour; Route 3 is utilizing White River Parkway to bypass downtown restrictions.

Weather Watch: Severe Storm Threat

While the morning commute may start with record-setting warmth, a severe storm front is forecast to move through Central Indiana this afternoon and evening. High winds with gusts exceeding 30 mph are expected throughout the day, which can create hazards for high-profile vehicles on I-65 and I-70. If thunderstorms develop during the evening rush hour, visibility will be significantly reduced. We recommend checking the latest radar before leaving the office today, as heavy rain could lead to ponding on major thoroughfares.
