Weekend Travel Outlook: Busy Saturday for the Circle City

Indianapolis commuters and visitors should prepare for a high-volume travel day this Saturday, March 7, 2026. A combination of major sporting events and ongoing infrastructure projects will impact traffic flow both in the downtown core and on the city’s northeast side. With the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament and Monster Energy Supercross taking place simultaneously, transit times in the downtown area are expected to increase significantly throughout the afternoon and evening.

Clear Path 465: Northeast Side Ramp Closures

As the Clear Path 465 project enters its final phases, several overnight and long-term closures remain in effect. Drivers on the northeast side should take note of the following specific alerts for tonight:

  • EB I-465 to NB I-69: The ramp from eastbound I-465 to northbound I-69 is scheduled to close tonight, Saturday, March 7, starting at 7:00 p.m. and will remain closed until 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Heavy equipment and barrier wall adjustments will be active during this window.
  • Binford Boulevard: Expect single-lane closures on both northbound and southbound Binford Boulevard south of 75th Street. Additionally, the single lane connecting northbound Binford Boulevard to northbound I-69 remains restricted between 75th and 82nd Streets.
  • Long-term Ramp Closures: The entrance ramp from 56th Street to northbound I-465 and the ramp from Allisonville Road to eastbound I-465 remain closed as part of the ongoing interchange reconstruction.

Downtown Event Alerts: Sports and Entertainment Traffic

Traffic will be particularly dense in the Wholesale District and near Lucas Oil Stadium. The Monster Energy AMA Supercross event is expected to draw thousands, with the main event beginning at 7:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early, as FanFest activities begin as early as noon. Nearby, Gainbridge Fieldhouse is hosting Session #6 of the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament at 2:00 p.m., leading to heavy pedestrian traffic along South Meridian and Pennsylvania Streets.

Public Transport and City Street Construction

IndyGo riders and eastside commuters should be aware of significant detours due to Blue Line construction and drainage improvements. Washington Street is currently closed between Southeastern and State Avenues. Consequently, Route 8 and other eastside transit lines are operating on established detours. Motorists should avoid Washington Street between Belmont Avenue and Harding Street, where traffic remains diverted to Michigan Street to accommodate utility work and pavement reconstruction.

Travel Recommendations

For those attending downtown events, utilizing the Red or Purple Line rapid transit may offer a faster alternative to navigating street-level congestion. If driving, consider using I-65 or I-70 as bypasses for the I-465 northeast corridor closures. Always allow an extra 20 to 30 minutes for travel during peak event entry times between 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
