What police say happened

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers were called to the 1800 block of Roosevelt Avenue at about 12:50 a.m. Sunday for a reported shooting. When officers arrived, they found two adult men on a front porch with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.

One of the men, identified as 30-year-old Jalen Stephen Williams, was pronounced dead. The second man was taken to a hospital and was reported in stable condition.

Location and immediate response

The shooting occurred in the city’s near northeast side. Police have not publicly detailed what led up to the gunfire, whether any weapons were recovered, or whether the shooting occurred indoors or outdoors before victims were found on the porch.

Detectives continued canvassing for witnesses and information as the homicide investigation remained open. Police encouraged anyone with information to contact the IMPD Homicide Office and identified Detective Katie Gourley as the case contact.

What remains unknown

  • No suspect description, arrests, or charges had been publicly announced.

  • No motive has been released, and investigators have not said whether the victims were targeted or whether the shooting stemmed from a dispute.

How this case fits into broader public-safety questions

Double shootings often present investigators with several early priorities: establishing a timeline, identifying who was present immediately before and after gunfire, determining whether the shooter arrived on foot or by vehicle, and mapping any routes away from the scene. In incidents where a victim survives, detectives typically work to corroborate accounts through physical evidence and witness statements as medical circumstances allow.

If you have information that could help detectives identify a suspect or clarify what happened, police have asked residents to call the IMPD Homicide Office.

The investigation into Williams’ death remained active as of the latest police update.
