What police say happened

Two people were hospitalized Wednesday evening after gunfire in two nearby locations on Indianapolis’ near north side, with one victim reported in critical condition and the other in stable condition.

Officers responded just after 5 p.m. to a report of a person shot at the intersection of East 29th Street and Central Avenue. Police located a victim suffering from a gunshot wound and reported that person was in critical condition.

At roughly the same time, officers were dispatched to another report of a person shot near East 27th Street and North Meridian Street. Police found a second victim with a gunshot wound; that person was reported to be in stable condition.

How the two scenes are connected

Investigators said the two shootings were related and believe the incident involved an exchange of gunfire between the two individuals who were shot. Police said it was not clear whether the individuals were driving at the time the shots were fired.

Police indicated no other individuals were involved and said they were not looking for any additional suspects.

Road closures and immediate impacts

As the investigation continued, Central Avenue was closed between East 28th and East 29th streets. Police did not immediately provide a timeline for when the roadway would reopen.

What remains unknown

Police have not released the identities or ages of the victims, nor details about what preceded the exchange of gunfire. Investigators also have not publicly identified a motive or clarified whether either individual legally possessed a firearm.

Authorities did not announce any arrests related to the shootings, and no additional injuries were reported at the two locations.
