Morning Commute Overview for Friday, February 13

Indianapolis commuters can expect a mix of long-term construction impacts and fresh transit adjustments this morning. While some overnight restrictions on the city's beltway have lifted just in time for the rush hour, significant lane closures on major surface streets and ongoing interstate projects continue to dictate travel times. With temperatures climbing into the high 40s today, the risk of morning ice has diminished compared to earlier in the week, but drivers should remain alert for shifting traffic patterns in active work zones.

Interstate and Highway Updates

  • I-465 Westbound: Overnight bridge construction between Ditch Road and Michigan Road (U.S. 421) concluded at 5:00 AM this morning. All lanes are expected to be open for the morning commute, though motorists should watch for lingering debris or construction vehicles exiting the site.
  • Township Line Road Bridge: The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has officially reopened the Township Line Road bridge over I-465. This provides much-needed relief for northside drivers who have been detouring since last summer.
  • Clear Path 465 (I-465 & I-69): Work continues on the northeast side. While major overnight ramp closures were reported earlier this week for bridge demolition, all ramps are currently scheduled to remain open through the daytime hours. However, lane widths remain restricted, and a 55-mph speed limit is strictly enforced via automated systems.
  • I-65/I-70 South Split: The ramp from Northbound I-65 to Westbound I-70 remains reduced to a single lane at mile marker 110.1. This restriction is part of long-term infrastructure improvements and will likely cause stacking during the evening peak.

Major Surface Street Closures

  • Washington Street: Significant disruptions continue on Washington Street due to Blue Line Bus Rapid Transit construction. All eastbound lanes are closed between Southeastern and State Avenues. One westbound lane remains open, but through-traffic is encouraged to use English Avenue or Brookville Road as alternates.
  • 18th Street: A total closure of 18th Street is currently in effect for utility work, which is expected to last through next week. This affects access to the IU Health area and local business traffic.

IndyGo Public Transit Alerts

Public transport users should be aware of several service changes and detours currently in place:

  • Red Line (Route 90): The Red Line continues to detour near Fountain Square. Both the Pleasant Run and Raymond bus platforms remain closed, with temporary stops established to assist riders in the area.
  • Route 8: Due to the Washington Street construction, Route 8 is operating on a significant detour. Riders should consult the updated daily schedule as travel times have been adjusted to account for the construction zone.
  • Route 26: Commuters on the north side can now benefit from increased frequency; as of this week, Route 26 has shifted to 30-minute service intervals seven days a week.
  • Purple Line (Route 92): Minor timing adjustments are in effect to improve on-time performance amidst the ongoing 18th Street and Blue Line detours.

Looking ahead, commuters should prepare for downtown restrictions starting tomorrow for the 500 Festival 3-Miler. For today, allowing an extra 10 to 15 minutes for trips through the I-465/I-69 interchange and the Near Eastside is highly recommended.
