West Indianapolis hit-and-run leaves pedestrian dead; police seek driver and review surveillance footage

Fatal crash reported on city’s west side
A man died after being struck by a vehicle that left the scene late Sunday night on Indianapolis’ west side, setting off an ongoing search for the driver and the car involved. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the crash occurred at about 11:35 p.m. in the 5400 block of West Washington Street, near Wayne Township Fire Department Station 82.
Officers responding to the area found the pedestrian after the impact. Emergency medical personnel provided treatment at the scene before transporting him to Eskenazi Hospital, where he later died. Police have not released the victim’s identity or age.
Vehicle details and investigative steps
Investigators described the vehicle as a dark-colored Dodge Charger from model years 2011 through 2014. Police said the car likely has heavy front-end damage, a detail that investigators expect could help identify the vehicle as they collect leads from the public and review available video.
Police said they believe surveillance camera footage will be important in identifying the driver involved. In hit-and-run cases, video can help establish the vehicle’s direction of travel, damage patterns, and identifying characteristics such as decals, missing parts, or unique lighting modifications. Police have not said whether any surveillance images have been released publicly.
What is known and what remains unclear
Authorities have not provided additional details about what led up to the crash, whether the pedestrian was in a crosswalk, or whether investigators suspect impairment, speed, distraction, or other contributing factors. Those determinations typically depend on a combination of scene evidence, witness statements, and video review.
The investigation is being handled through the department’s crash investigators, and officials have urged anyone who may have information to come forward.
