Winter Storm Impacts: Ice and Snow on the Roads

Commuters in Indianapolis are facing a difficult start to the work week this Monday, January 26, 2026. A winter storm that moved through the region over the weekend continues to impact travel. INDOT and local authorities have warned of icy patches and blowing snow due to frigid temperatures. While over 940 plow trucks and 1,600 operators have been deployed across the state, many secondary roads and neighborhood streets remain snow-covered. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distances, and allow for an extra 20 to 30 minutes for their morning commute.

Major Interstate Construction: I-465 and I-65 Updates

In addition to the weather, several long-term construction projects are causing restricted movement on major arteries:

  • I-465 Westbound: Starting at 10:00 PM tonight, bridge construction will block the two right lanes between Ditch Road and US 421. This work is expected to cause overnight delays through Wednesday morning.
  • Clear Path 465 (Northeast Side): While the project is over 80% complete, heavy congestion continues at the I-465 and I-69 interchange. New lanes on southbound I-465 from 71st Street to 56th Street are now open, but the entrance ramp from 56th Street/Shadeland Avenue remains closed for ongoing work.
  • I-65 Southeast Side: Between the I-465 interchange and the I-65/I-70 overpass, traffic is shifted into two lanes in each direction for shoulder widening and pavement replacement.

IndyGo Alerts: Blue Line Progress and Route Detours

IndyGo has issued several alerts for Monday morning. Most significantly, construction on the Blue Line has reached a new phase. On or after today, Eastbound Washington Street is closed between Southeastern and State avenues for storm sewer installation. Eastbound traffic is being detoured south on Southeastern Avenue and north on State Avenue to return to Washington Street.

Other transit alerts include:

  • Red Line Detours: The 18th Street closure remains in effect, forcing the 90 and 92 routes to detour and temporarily closing the IU Health Station.
  • Winter Weather Service: IndyGo is monitoring the winter storm; riders should expect some delays on fixed routes as buses navigate icy road conditions.
  • Fare Reminder: As a reminder, the new fare structure that began on January 1 remains in effect, with standard two-hour unlimited passes now costing $2.75.

Local Closures and Roundabout Work

In Fishers, motorists should watch for daily lane restrictions on State Road 37 near 141st Street between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Additionally, the westbound lane of 136th Street between Cyntheanne Road and Prairie Baptist Road remains closed for utility work. In Bloomington, South College Avenue south of Third Street is closed today for skybridge construction, with traffic diverted to Rogers Street.
