Winter Storm Warning: Hazardous Travel Conditions Today

Today is Sunday, January 25, 2026, and Indianapolis is facing a dual challenge of severe winter weather and major infrastructure projects. City officials have issued a Winter Storm Warning for the region, with significant snow accumulation expected throughout the day. With temperatures hovering around 10 degrees Fahrenheit, the effectiveness of road salt is severely limited, making bridges and overpasses particularly treacherous. Mayor Joe Hogsett and the Department of Public Works have strongly urged residents to avoid all non-essential travel today. Priority-one routes are being plowed around the clock, but visibility and traction remain poor across the metro area.

Major Project Updates: Blue Line and Capitol Avenue

Beyond the weather, several long-term construction projects continue to impact traffic flow. Commuters on the west side should prepare for significant barriers along West Washington Street. Construction for IndyGo’s Blue Line is in full swing from Rockville Road to the Indianapolis Zoo, with miles of barrels lining the roadway as crews install storm sewer trunk lines. In the heart of downtown, Capitol Avenue remains closed to all vehicular traffic between Louisiana and South Streets. This closure supports ongoing work near the Indiana Convention Center and is expected to remain in place until mid-March. Drivers heading to the city center should utilize Maryland Street, which has been adjusted to allow for garage access in the affected area.

Northeast Side: Clear Path 465 Restrictions

The massive Clear Path 465 project at the I-465 and I-69 interchange is nearing its final phases but still presents challenges for Sunday travel. While the project is roughly 80% complete and most new bridges are open, drivers should be aware of the following specific restrictions:

  • Binford Boulevard: A 12-foot width restriction is in effect on the I-465 eastbound ramp to Binford Boulevard until January 30.
  • I-465 Northbound: Continuous entrance ramp closures remain in effect between North Shadeland Avenue and East 56th Street in Lawrence.
  • Bridge Work: Prepare for nightly lane shifts near the I-465 and US 31 interchange on the south side as bridge replacement work continues.

Public Transit and Safety Reminders

IndyGo riders should expect service delays across all routes due to the winter storm. Blue Line construction at the intersection of Washington Street and Capitol Avenue has also necessitated the relocation of several transit stops. For those who must be on the roads, remember that first responders and tow trucks may have slowed response times due to the hazardous conditions. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle and avoid all non-essential trips until plowing crews have cleared secondary streets.
