Winter Storm Warning and Severe Travel Alerts

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), along with the State Police and Department of Homeland Security, has issued a severe travel warning for Saturday, January 24, 2026, as a massive winter storm begins its trek across the state. Forecasters are calling for significant snowfall totals, with the heaviest impacts expected to hit the southern and central portions of Indiana. While the morning may start with lighter precipitation, the greatest impact on Indianapolis commutes is projected for Saturday evening through Sunday morning.

A Winter Storm Warning is currently in effect, and officials are urging Hoosiers to prepare for dangerously cold temperatures and negative wind chills that will persist through Tuesday. Heavy snowfall, combined with blowing and drifting snow, is expected to make visibility poor and road surfaces slick. If you do not need to be on the roads this evening, authorities strongly recommend staying home to allow emergency crews to work.

Statewide Road Conditions and INDOT Response

INDOT has mobilized its full winter response team to combat the storm. More than 940 plow trucks and over 1,600 operators have been deployed across state-maintained roads, including major arteries such as I-65, I-70, and the I-465 loop. Crews are focusing on salting and brining operations, though the frigid temperatures may limit the effectiveness of traditional road salt. Motorists who must travel are advised to clear all ice and snow from their vehicles, turn on headlights, and maintain significant following distances.

Ongoing Infrastructure and Construction Updates

Despite the winter weather, several major infrastructure projects remain active in the Circle City. The Clear Path 465 project on the northeast side is currently 80% complete. While mainline completion is slated for Spring 2026, the recent cold snap has slightly slowed the final steps for opening new ramps at the I-69/I-465 interchange. Drivers should remain alert for shifting lane configurations near Binford Boulevard and 82nd Street, where crews have been working to open new southbound lanes.

On the west side, IndyGo Blue Line construction continues along West Washington Street. Commuters will encounter miles of barrels and lane restrictions from Rockville Road to the Indianapolis Zoo as crews install storm sewer infrastructure. On the north side and in Carmel, the LevelUp31 project continues to impact the U.S. 31 and I-465 interchange, with work projected to continue into 2027.

Public Transport and Commuter Safety

IndyGo’s Purple Line, which launched in late 2024, is fully operational today, though riders should expect significant delays as buses navigate snow-covered streets. The Blue Line construction remains a factor for those using West Washington routes. All commuters are encouraged to check the Transit app or IndyGo website for real-time service disruptions caused by the escalating winter storm. Stay safe, plan for extra travel time, and keep an emergency kit in your vehicle if you must head out today.
