Weather Alert: Hazardous Driving Conditions

Commuters in Central Indiana are facing a challenging start this Thursday, March 5, 2026. A Weather Impact Alert is in effect due to dense fog and heavy rainfall across the metro area. Visibility is near zero in low-lying areas, and localized flooding on surface streets has been reported. Drivers are urged to use low-beam headlights and increase following distances as visibility remains limited through the mid-morning hours. Public safety officials advise against driving through any water-covered roadways, as depth can be difficult to gauge in the current conditions.

Northeast Side: Clear Path 465 Progress

The multi-year Clear Path 465 project is entering its final major phases, but significant restrictions remain on the northeast side. While mainline I-465 is on track for a spring completion, several key access points are currently unavailable to drivers:

  • The entrance ramp from 56th Street and North Shadeland Avenue to I-465 Northbound remains closed. This closure is scheduled to persist through June 30, 2026.
  • Overnight ramp demolition continues at the I-69/I-465 interchange. Specifically, demolition of the former bridge from Southbound I-69 to Southbound I-465 over Binford Boulevard may cause lingering rubbernecking delays during the morning peak.
  • Automated speed enforcement remains active in the construction zone between I-69 and 71st Street, with a strictly enforced 55 mph limit.

Downtown and West Side: Washington Street and I-465

Major infrastructure work for the IndyGo Blue Line is significantly impacting travel on Washington Street. Commuters should prepare for the following navigation changes:

  • West Washington Street is closed to through traffic between Belmont Avenue and Harding Street for storm sewer installation. This closure is expected to last until May 2026. One eastbound lane remains open for local business access only.
  • On the east side, Washington Street between Southeastern and State Avenues is restricted for similar utility work. Drivers should expect significant delays near the Twin Aire area.
  • On the northwest side of the I-465 loop, bridge construction between Ditch Road and US 421 has resulted in recent lane shifts. While overnight lane blockages typically clear by early morning, heavy equipment and barrier walls require caution through the corridor.

Public Transit and South Split Alerts

IndyGo riders on Route 8 should continue using the established detour via North White River Parkway and Michigan Street. Westbound bus stops between Belmont and Harding remain closed. For those navigating the South Split downtown, the ramp from I-65 Northbound to I-70 Westbound remains reduced to a single lane for long-term bridge maintenance. This restriction is expected to remain in place through the end of the year, frequently causing backups during the evening rush.
