Morning Commute Overview

Commuters heading into the Circle City this Friday, February 27, 2026, should prepare for a mix of seasonal roadwork and persistent bottlenecks. While the weather remains fair with temperatures climbing into the high 50s by mid-afternoon, several major infrastructure projects are reaching critical phases, leading to significant lane restrictions and reduced speed limits across the metro area.

Major Interstate Projects: I-465 and I-69

The Clear Path 465 project continues to be the primary focus for drivers on the northeast side. As construction on the mainline is slated for completion later this spring, the interchange at I-465 and I-69 remains a high-activity zone. Motorists should anticipate the following:

  • Entrance ramp closures remain in effect at 56th Street and North Shadeland Avenue for those attempting to merge onto northbound I-465; this restriction is expected to last through the summer.
  • Width limits of 12 feet are still active for the ramp from eastbound I-465 to Binford Boulevard.
  • I-65 northbound is experiencing its typical morning crawl between Raymond Street and the South Split due to ongoing shoulder work and construction staging.

Level Up 31 and Carmel Transitions

To the north, the Level Up 31 project is in full swing between Indianapolis and Carmel. This Phase 1 work has brought a mandatory speed limit reduction to 45 MPH along the I-465 and US-31 interchange. Commuters should watch for multiple ramp closures and local access detours near 106th Street. Additionally, motorists on westbound I-465 near the Meridian Street interchange should stay alert for lane shifts that may cause sudden braking during peak travel times between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

IndyGo Transit and Infrastructure Alerts

Public transit riders should be aware of recent service adjustments that took effect earlier this month. Most notably, Route 26 now operates with a higher frequency of every 30 minutes, seven days a week, helping to ease the Northside commute. However, construction for the upcoming Blue Line bus rapid transit continues to impact local traffic:

  • Partial lane closures are in place on Washington Street between Southeastern and State avenues.
  • Route 8 is running on a modified daily schedule to accommodate these closures.
  • The Red Line (Route 90) continues its detour through Fountain Square, which is expected to remain in place through the end of the month.

Roadway Safety and Work Zone Awareness

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has officially rolled out its Guardian Angel safety initiative this week. Drivers will notice highway workers equipped with flashing green safety lights designed to increase visibility in active work zones. INDOT reminds all drivers to put down mobile devices and adhere to posted work zone speeds, as over 1,500 injuries were reported in Indiana work zones over the previous year. If you encounter a stalled vehicle, particularly on the eastbound I-465 loop near Allisonville Road, move over to provide safe clearance for emergency responders.
