Fire crews responded before dawn to a reported blaze with possible entrapment

Investigators are working to determine what caused a fatal mobile home fire on Indianapolis’ south side that left an 80-year-old man dead and killed two pets. The fire occurred in the 4600 block of Matthews Way, near Madison Avenue and Thompson Road.

Indianapolis Fire Department units were dispatched at about 1:25 a.m. Monday after a report of a working structure fire with possible entrapment. The first arriving engine found the single-level mobile home fully involved, with conditions deteriorating rapidly as the fire intensified.

Collapse concerns complicated early firefighting decisions

Firefighters reported a partial collapse of the trailer, an indication of structural instability that can limit interior access and force crews to adjust tactics. The incident drew a large response, with 25 fire department units dispatched as crews worked to bring the flames under control.

The fire was reported under control at approximately 1:51 a.m. The victim was located shortly after, around 2:08 a.m. A dog and a cat were also found dead inside the home.

Smoke alarms and other safety factors are part of the review

Fire investigators noted that there were no working smoke alarms in the mobile home. The presence or absence of functioning alarms is typically a key element of a post-fire assessment because early warning can affect escape opportunities, particularly in fast-moving fires.

Crews also reported live ammunition discharging inside the burning structure. While ammunition in a fire can create hazards for responders and influence how close firefighters can safely operate, it does not by itself indicate the origin or cause of a blaze. Investigators will separately assess the fire’s point of origin, contributing factors, and whether any electrical, heating, cooking, or other accidental sources played a role.

What is known—and what remains unclear

  • Location: 4624 Matthews Way area, Indianapolis’ south side.

  • Response time: Units dispatched about 1:25 a.m.; fire under control around 1:51 a.m.

  • Fatalities: One adult male (80 years old) and two pets (a dog and a cat).

  • Investigation status: Cause has not been determined.

Fire investigations generally remain open until officials can confirm the fire’s origin and cause through scene examination and follow-up work.

The fatality was described as the second fire-related death in the Indianapolis Fire Department’s service district so far in 2026. No additional details about the victim’s identity have been released in the initial public information, and investigators have not announced a cause of the fire.
