Commuter Alert: Major Arteries Impacted by Infrastructure Projects

As we head into the mid-week commute this Wednesday, February 25, 2026, Indianapolis drivers and transit riders should prepare for significant travel adjustments. Several long-term infrastructure projects have reached critical phases, particularly affecting the downtown core and the Washington Street corridor. Motorists are advised to allow an additional 15 to 20 minutes for cross-town travel.

Downtown and Convention Center Construction

The skyline is changing rapidly, but so is the street-level access near the Indiana Convention Center. Drivers are reminded that Capitol Avenue remains closed to all vehicular traffic between Georgia Street and South Street. This closure, supporting the Signia by Hilton and Convention Center expansion, is scheduled to persist through the end of March 2026. Additionally:

  • Illinois Street is currently restricted from South Street to Georgia Street.
  • Georgia Street is closed to both vehicles and pedestrians between Capitol Avenue and Illinois Street.
  • Union Station underpass rehabilitation continues, causing intermittent lane shifts near the Meridian Street intersection.

Blue Line and Washington Street Restrictions

The construction of the Blue Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor is significantly impacting East and West Washington Street. Commuters should navigate the following active work zones:

  • West Side: Washington Street is closed to westbound through traffic between Belmont Avenue and Harding Street for storm sewer installation. Only one eastbound lane remains open for local access. Westbound motorists should detour south on Harding Street to I-70 West.
  • East Side: A three-month closure is active on Washington Street between Southeastern and State avenues. During this phase, the eastbound lanes are closed to through traffic. Motorists are being detoured via Southeastern Avenue.

Clear Path 465 and Northeast Side Progress

On the northeast side, the Clear Path 465 project is over 80% complete, but work in the I-69/I-465 interchange remains a primary source of congestion. While many new bridges have opened, drivers should be aware of the following:

  • The entrance ramp to northbound I-465 from North Shadeland Avenue and East 56th Street remains closed as part of the mainline reconfiguration.
  • Automated speed enforcement is active throughout the I-465 work zones from 71st Street to the White River; drivers are cautioned to maintain the posted 55 mph limit to avoid fines.

IndyGo Transit Updates

IndyGo has implemented several service adjustments this month. Notably, Route 26 now operates with 30-minute frequency seven days a week to better serve commuters between downtown and the north side. Due to Blue Line construction, Route 8 remains on a significant detour; riders should check for temporary stops near Michigan Street and White River Parkway.
